Tips/Expert Advice

What you need to know about Algae

  • Algae grows in both salt and fresh water, thriving in temperatures above 20°C
  • Nutrients introduced to the pool via rain, leaves, and even pool toys, coupled with sunlight exposure, are an ideal haven for algae infestation
  • Algae spores are everywhere, always floating about waiting to land on a surface, or find a dead spot to settle in
  • Growing from its core outward, algae gets many times bigger before we can even see it
  • Brushing algae fractures the hard outer shell, allowing the algaecide to work better
  • Fundamental: the more the pool surface is brushed, the more effective the algaecide treatment will be

Regular Maintenance Tips For Summer

Run your Filter for a minimum of 8 hours per day.  This ensures that your Pool has been circulated, helping to prevent algae and bacteria growth.

Make sure that the eyeball return fittings on your pool are angled downward at a 45 degree angle.
Maintain a PH level of 7.4 – 7.6. This prevents potential staining, corrosion or scaling.
Always maintain a chlorine residual OF 1 – 3 PPM.  This helps to keep the water clean and bacteria free.

CLEAN FILTER
Filters should be chemically cleaned twice a year using BioGuard Filter Brite. This removes the stubborn debris and oils that cannot be removed just by backwashing or hosing.  Degreasing and descaling your filter with Filter Brite will bring your filter back to peak efficiency.

Winter Wise – To Do Once a Month
STEP 1: Burn Out Extreme – With the pump running in normal filtration mode, slowly pour into the skimmer
1 bag pools up to 50,000 litres Wait 15 minutes
2 bag pools over  50,000 litres Wait 15 minutes
Any pool blanket or pool cover should be removed before adding the Burn Out Extreme. It should remain off for at least 6 hours; this allows unwanted nitrogen to leave the water and greatly prolongs the life of the pool blanket or pool cover.

STEP 2: Back-Up II Algae Inhibitor – With pump running, in normal filtration mode, pour evenly around the edges of the pool.  The pump should remain running for at least four hours after the treatment.

Winter Wise Tips
CLEAN EXPOSED POOL SURFACES
Scum lines that build up around the water line over summer are a food source for bacteria and algae.  Remove them with BioGuard Squeaky Clean.

CLEAN THE POOL AND BRUSH
Debris should be removed from the pool and skimmer box on a regular basis.  Pool surfaces should also be brushed regularly.
